WUNC Broadcast News Producer for "The State of Things"

WUNC Public Radio

Company WUNC Public Radio
Position WUNC Broadcast News Producer for "The State of Things"
Description WUNC Broadcast News Producer for SOT

North Carolina Public Radio WUNC, Chapel Hill

Position Summary This position focuses on, but is not limited to, production of daily news and public affairs programs. These programs include interviews and analysis on many subjects (news, culture, etc.) in North Carolina. They are some of the most visible extensions of WUNC-FM’s public service to more than 400,000 listeners each week.

The Broadcast News Producer will report to the State of Things Managing Editor at WUNC-FM. This reporting relationship will be characterized by supervision of the research, production and dissemination of information to WUNC’s audience through locally oriented radio programs and online.

The Broadcast News Producer will be responsible for assisting WUNC’s listeners in the extension and enrichment of their education by presenting the audience with historical, contextual and current events information of cultural, political, healthcare, public policy, and economic issues.

The Broadcast News Producer will work closely with the Managing Editor and others to develop story ideas and schedule interviews for these informative shows. This position will conduct extensive research into current issues in politics, health care, economics and culture for the enrichment of WUNC’s audience and listeners throughout the state and region. The Broadcast News Producer will have broad discretion over the information researched and presented to the listening audience, and will be responsible for providing content, supporting information, and, when necessary, dissenting views on issues of significant concern to the public. As such, this position requires considerable expertise and creativity in a range of journalistic activities. This producer would be responsible for creating and maintaining relationships with newsmakers, lawmakers and political stakeholders to land interviews with those individuals when it fits with the show’s coverage plans.

As news events do not conform to a regular 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. schedule, there will be times when the Broadcast News Producer will be on call for breaking news during weekends and after hours. This producer would be a liaison between the show and the news team to provide audio cuts and spot coverage of show content for evening and morning broadcasts.

Due to the position’s responsibility and high degree of autonomy, the Broadcast News Producer must be a resourceful self-starter in the areas of research, journalism and broadcast production. The skills to be successful require a mix of talent in interpretation of research on current events, outstanding written and oral communication, initiative and creativity in reaching a broad, diverse listening audience. This is a position for a dogged, well-sourced news junkie who can identify compelling, up-to-date audio and political trends.
