Position General Manager--campus television channel (AppTV)
Description

The Department of Communication at Appalachian State University is seeking to hire a General Manager (GM) for AppTV, an HD TV channel that is available on cable, online, and on-demand streaming. AppTV serves the department, campus, and community through development of original programming and promotion of relevant events. It functions as a learning and teaching lab where students and faculty collaborate on research and creative endeavors while striving to produce professional quality work. The GM will expand the presence and impact of the station on campus and beyond while supervising and mentoring student staff and interns. The GM will report directly to the Department Chair and will work closely and collaboratively with faculty and students on program development.

Duties include managing the overall operations of the channel; working with the college development officer on fundraising initiatives; overseeing the use of interactive platforms, including social media and online content; maintaining collaborative, collegial relationships with colleagues throughout the university; ensuring professional behavior of thestation’s staff and volunteers; and upholding ethical and legal standards. Duties may also include teaching up to one Electronic Media/Broadcasting course per semester.

Minimum qualifications include a bachelor’s degree, experience working in television, and general knowledge of production and programming. Preferred qualifications include experience in supervision, financial management/budgeting, and sales/fundraising. The ideal candidate will bea visionary for the future of the television industry and the future of the channel.

The Department of Communication offers five major areas (advertising, communication studies, electronic media/broadcasting, journalism, and public relations) and an online graduate certificate in strategic communication. The department employs 35 full-time faculty members dedicated to teaching approximately 1,000 communication majors. Appalachian State University is a member institution of the seventeen-campus University of North Carolina System. Located in Boone, North Carolina, the university has approximately 18,000 students, primarily in bachelor’s and master’s programs in liberal arts and applied fields.
